What's My Song Of Summer 2019?

It’s summertime! Well, not really if you live in this city! The good news is, is that there is plenty of music out there being released for us to listen to, with artists all looking to claim the title “Song Of Summer”. I really don’t think that there is a clear winner, because everywhere you look will show you a big list of all the summer hits that were hot at the time. I know for a fact that the winner for summer 2017 had to be Despacito, given the amount of times I heard it on the radio. That’s ok though, as soon as it came on I just switched stations! As of late, I have been listening to my own music in the car, trying to avoid the overplayed hits. I am well aware of what’s currently out there and charting, and have heard some songs this year that I think have potential to be Song of Summer. Billie Eilish and “Bad Guy”, Lil Nas X “Old Town Road” ft. Billy Ray Cyrus, which is been #1 in the Billboard Hot 100 singles as of July 20th,2019. These songs have been all over the radio which means the people are loving them! Everyone has their song that they have going on repeat during the summer months. The beauty of music is that we all have different tastes, and your choice for your number one song of summer will most likely be different than mine! It forces us to broaden our horizons, and listen to songs that we otherwise may not have listened too! I felt like I wanted to share this song, as I have been blasting it for the past week on repeat, multiple times a day! So without further ado, my Song Of Summer 2019 is……

No, it’s not Noel Gallagher’s “Black Star Dancing”, but it was a very close tie. I love that song, and the groove it brings. My pick this year goes to The S.L.P- “Nobody Else” birthed from none other than Mr. Sergio Lorenzo “Serge” Pizzorno. The S.L.P (which stands for Sergio Lorenzo Pizzorno) Now, if you’re not familiar with Serge, let me fill you in. Serge is the principal songwriter and guitar player for the UK rock band Kasabian. He’s the guy with the wicked head of hair almost similar to Noel Gallagher and other artists from the UK, but with more poof. Now if you’re wondering whose Kasabian? Please do yourself a favor and google them! They are massive in the UK with their songs like “Clubfoot” “L.S.F” and “Fire”. Take a listen to anyone of those and you’ll see why they are so good!

Presently, Kasabian is on a 1 year hiatus, giving band members a break to explore other opportunities. With extra downtime, Serge decided to start his own solo project The S.L.P. In a recent interview with NME Serge said,

“Kasabian organised some time off, and I’ve never afforded myself that luxury – well, none of us have really,” Pizzorno told NME. “We’ve never stopped. I found a perfect little window to experiment and see where that took me. I just enjoyed that freedom of being able to do whatever.”

He also goes onto say in the interview,

While experimenting away from the band, Pizzorno said that he’d discovered “a world of his own that he can visit”. “These are the extreme sides of my personality that I can explore,” he went on. “This is another place that I can visit. Now that it exists, I can go there whenever I want. It’s an outlet to keep me sane.”

This outlet gave birth to his most recent release, “Nobody Else”, my personal choice for song of summer 2019. The only way I found out about The S.L.P, was through Kasabian’s facebook page, as they shared the release of the song on there. I love this song! From the intro with the piano, and Serge opening with the lyrics” I don’t wanna go to work today” right to my favorite line of the chorus, “ Can’t beat the feeling, you just can’t beat the feeling.” As soon as I heard that line, I couldn’t help but get those summertime feelings. Who wants to go to work when you could be outside enjoying the summer with friends and family? You could be driving around windows down, sunglasses on. This song is definitely different for me, as I'm not really into the whole pop/synth sound, but Serge manages to make it work. The song manages to transport you somewhere else where the sun is shining, and you just can’t beat that feeling. If I was to listen to Pop/Synth, it would be strictly The S.L.P haha. I know this song won’t make the big lists of all the songs of summer, but it is definitely worth listening to. If you’re like me, it’s a change of sound and scenery. I don’t think I would like the song if it was by anyone else but Serge! The guy is a songwriting genius! At Least I think so anyway! “Nobody Else” is the only song I want blasting in the car. It makes driving that much more fun, even if the sun is nowhere to be found. It manages to uplift your spirit, and just makes you want to vibe! Please do give it a listen!
