Okay before I get into this I know most of the stuff on here so far has been about either Noel Gallagher or Liam Gallagher.I told myself before starting this that I would try to write on different artists and what not but Noel and Liam are just so easy to write about and I just love sharing my opinion on their work. Plus their sibling rivalry is just so damn entertaining! I promise that my next post will be something that is not Noel or Liam related! So keep your eyes tuned!
The reason I'm writing this is because Mr.Noel Gallagher AKA "The Chief" just dropped a new song from his final EP in the trilogy of EP's that he has released throughout the year. I just wanted to share my initial reaction. The song is called "Wandering Star", released on November 14th 2019. The EP is titled "Blue Moon Rising". I feel like he is throwing a nod to CCR and their song "Bad Moon Rising" or the title of the EP is totally coincidental haha.
I first caught wind of this song from a live video that was shared of Noel Gallagher who is currently opening for U2 on their Joshua Tree tour in Australia. It was a fan made video of Noel playing wandering star, but it was really shitty audio and it was so hard to make out the lyrics and to hear anything at all really. Usually when an artist plays an unreleased song at a show, it's not expected to be released for awhile. But hey it's Noel. The guys got songs coming out of his ass! I was surprised that the song was released so quickly. I mean he already had it recorded I think last year he said in an interview. Plus, the guy is a songwriting genius so I guess it's not really a surprise haha. I really wish I could have seen Noel open up for U2, cause I would be hitting both of my favourite artists in one shot. But, I am thankful to have seen U2 play the Joshua Tree in New York in 2017 and plus I had seen Noel recently as well.
So, my first initial reaction with the intro of this song was bells? Really? I know Noel is exploring his sound, but I really hoped this wasn't going to be a Christmas song. It couldn't be because he hates Christmas in its entirety and everything associated with it. Plus the fact that he's releasing it so close to December which is the start of the Christmas season made me a little suspicious as well. Thankfully enough I don't really think that's the case. This is not a Christmas song. I repeat this is not a Christmas song. There's no mention of Santa Claus or presents or sleighs and reindeer! Just because there's bells doesn't mean it's a Christmas song. Look at Coldplay and Viva la Vida. That song has a bell going off all the way through the damn song, and I actually really liked it. Seeing Will Champion ring that bell in the live version of the song was awesome. Fans are already going off in various groups on the internet that this is a Christmas song solely because it has bells. Well it ain't!
Initially I wasn't a fan of the bells are ringing off, but like most of null Noel's new stuff, it has grown on me. To me wandering star is just like a feel good song, and it screams classic Noel. Lyrically it is spot-on, and I would not expect nothing less from him. There is one lyric that I kind of laughed at and thought, why? The lyric is "whatever the cat drags in, belongs to us" I know Noel has a few cats himself, but for some reason I feel like he was just trying to fill in the blanks on this one and came up with that line haha. It really sticks out from the rest of the lyrics of the song, and I caught it right away. That is my only gripe with this song. Otherwise I really like it.
Even with the bells ringing in the background the song still captures that psychedelic kind of spacey feeling that Noel has been leaning towards with his latest solo work, but at the same time strays from the sounds of Black Star Dancing and I really like that. It sort of goes back to old Noel.I really love the lyrics of this song. Noel is a lyrical mastermind. I really don't know where he comes up with this shit but god is it ever amazing. The lyrics are your standard Noel. I find in this song they're soft and have a dreamy tone. The opening verse starts with
Everybody needs someone to be there
Everybody needs to be alone
If ever you should take the time to wander
Let me be the star to guide you home
See, not Christmas related haha. He really knows how to set the tone for a song. I also really enjoy the chorus of this song, and find it really easy to sing along to. But hey, I sing to all of his songs! I'd share the chorus with you, but I'd much rather you listen to it for yourself. To me, I find it upbeat and inspirational, while the music playing in the background creates that spacey and dreamy atmosphere. I almost find it relaxing.I really would encourage you after listening to the song to go and have a read of the lyrics. I feel like people understand the song more when they actually read the lyrics for them self.
All in all, I was quite surprised by this song. Surprised that it was released so fast, and was surprised that I actually really like it. I'm really hoping that this doesn't turn into a Christmas song for me since it is released so close to the season and it has bells for crying out loud, but I will try my best not to let it become a Christmas song. Only time will tell haha. For now I'm going to keep enjoying the song. I almost prefer this song over Christmas songs! Just kidding! Although I probably would laugh if Noel did a Christmas song. It would probably be good, but it is highly unlikely that it would happen.
Have a listen to the song for yourself, and let me know what you think. Do you think this is a Christmas song? Has Noel totally lost his mind? I don't think so! Were all wanderers of this world, and Noel is the wandering star to guide us home! At Least for me he is!
